Terry Fox set off on his “Marathon of Hope” on April 12th, 1980. Having lost one leg to cancer, he set out to run across Canada to raise awareness. He ran almost the equivalent of a full marathon every day for 143 days covering 3339 miles (5373 km). Sadly, when he reached Thunder Bay, he could not continue. He would lose his battle with cancer June 28, 1981. A true Canadian hero, he is honored in many places, including a mountain in the Rockies named after him and a statue across from Parliament in Ottawa. This is the statue in Thunder Bay, where his heroic run ended.
